Our national debt will soon reach a level not seen since the end of World War II. But there are vast differences in the circumstances surrounding these events. The debt of World War II was amassed to rid the world of a demon determined to eradicate freedom from the world. That debt quickly fell, thanks to our recently returned young men who were eager to reach for the American dream. Our economy surged. We led the world in manufacturing and exports. Today, we are lucky if our young people see the merit in graduating from high school.

I chose the latter. This team of economists who had learned so much from the American experiment did a “friendly takeover” of the Pinochet government in order to engineer a free-market revolution and to restore democratic rule. Our goal was nothing less than to transform a socialist country into a free one. And, we believe, we succeeded.
